Driveways & Paving: what you need to know

What it is

We install driveways, patios, paths and paved areas. The work includes excavation, a compacted sub-base, edging, drainage and the paving surface itself, whether block paving, slabs or natural stone.

Who it is for

Homeowners wanting off-road parking or a better-looking frontage, families wanting a usable patio, and commercial clients needing hard-wearing paved areas.

When you need it

When an old driveway is cracked, sunken or holding water, when you need more parking, or when you want to turn an unused garden into usable outdoor space.

Why professional work matters

Paving fails from the ground up. Too little excavation, a thin or poorly compacted sub-base, or no thought for drainage causes sinking, rocking slabs and standing water. The surface is only as good as what is underneath.

The risk of waiting

Why cheap driveways fail

A driveway can look fine on day one and fail within a couple of winters if the base is wrong.

Sinking and rutting

A shallow or poorly compacted base lets the surface sink where cars drive and park.

Standing water

Without proper falls and drainage, water pools on the surface and can run towards the house.

Loose and rocking slabs

Slabs laid on dabs or a thin bed move, crack and become trip hazards.

Weeds and spreading

Missing edge restraints let block paving spread and weeds push through joints.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a quote without asking about excavation depth and sub-base.
  • Ignoring where surface water will go.
  • Skipping edge restraints on block paving.
  • Paying in full before the work is finished.

In detail

Driveway and paving options

The right surface depends on use, look and budget. These are the options we install across Maidstone and Kent.

Block paving

Concrete or clay blocks laid on a sand bed over a compacted sub-base, with edge restraints to stop spreading. Blocks can be laid in different patterns and colours and individual blocks can be lifted if needed.

Slab and natural stone paving

Porcelain, concrete and natural stone slabs suit patios and paths. Slabs should be laid on a full mortar bed rather than spot dabs to stop rocking and cracking.

Drainage and falls

Every paved area needs to shed water. We form falls away from the house and can add channel drains, soakaways or connections to suitable drainage.

Patios and paths

Patios and paths are built on the same principles as driveways, with a base suited to foot traffic and garden furniture. They are often combined with hard landscaping such as steps and low walls.

Residential and commercial

We pave domestic driveways and patios as well as commercial forecourts and paths, where heavier use needs a stronger base.

Driveways & Paving across Maidstone and Kent

We are based in Maidstone and carry out driveways & paving for homeowners and businesses across the towns and villages below, as well as wider Kent, London and the South East. Wherever you are, the process is the same: a free site visit, a written quote and the work led by Michael on site.

Guide

Choosing the right driveway

Think about use first

How many cars, how heavy, and how often? A driveway for two family cars needs a different base to a path, and a commercial forecourt different again. We size the excavation and sub-base for the use, not just the look.

Where will the water go?

Large paved areas send a lot of water somewhere. We plan falls away from the house, and where needed, add channel drains or soakaways. Getting this right protects both the driveway and your property.

Matching the house

Block, slab or stone colour and pattern can complement the brick and render of the house. We bring the options to the site visit so you can see what will suit.

What the 5-year guarantee means

Paving work comes with a 5-year guarantee. It reflects the confidence that comes from building the base properly rather than laying a surface on poorly prepared ground.

Choosing paving for heavy use

Commercial forecourts, shared driveways and areas used by vans need a deeper base and paving suited to the load. We match the build-up to how the area will be used, with the base and paving chosen for the intended use. Paving work carries a 5-year guarantee.

What goes into a properly built driveway

A driveway that lasts starts with excavating soft topsoil and unsuitable ground, then laying a compacted granular sub-base to a depth suited to the vehicles using it. Edge restraints hold block paving in place and stop it spreading. A bedding layer gives the paving an even base, and joints are filled to lock the surface together. Each layer is there for a reason, and skipping any of them is where cheap driveways fail.

Removing an old driveway

Discuss the existing surface at the site visit so the quotation can state any preparation required before new paving is laid. Ground conditions, access and the proposed use affect the new sub-base. Do not assume removal or disposal is included unless it has been agreed.

Patios and paths alongside driveways

A new driveway can be planned alongside a path to the front door or a side patio. Considering them together can help coordinate materials, levels and drainage. The quotation should set out the agreed scope rather than assume combining work will reduce its cost.

How quoting and payment work

Every driveways & paving enquiry starts with a free, no-obligation site visit and a written quotation, so you can see exactly what is included before deciding. On larger projects we take a one-third deposit to secure materials, and the balance is split across 3 to 4 stage payments agreed before work starts.

Who will be on site

Work is led by Michael Speller, a City & Guilds qualified bricklayer with NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 in Brickwork, with a core team of four. Where your project needs electrical or plumbing work, we bring in trusted subcontracted trades and coordinate them, so you deal with one contractor throughout. We hold public liability insurance.
